DJING WITH A SIDE OF SAX PLEASE?
If you have been to a wedding or two in the past few years you would have undoubtedly noticed that DJs now own this space (sorry bands!). But it’s true, according to Easy Weddings 2023 Wedding industry report which surveyed over 3,500 couples, DJs have well and truly taken over the Wedding entertainment landscape with 43% of couples choosing a DJ followed by 17% going with a DJ/Live element and the remaining 17% going with a band. To round out the list there is also Soloists 6%, acoustic duo 10%, strings 4% and other 4%. Based on these stats we also agree that the rise of a DJ accompanied by a live element is a great new trend to make your wedding stand out from the rest. Having them perform for a couple of hours during your busiest dance floor time (towards the end of the night) is the perfect amount to really elevate your wedding reception to new heights. My tip: I highly encourage all of our couples to book this service ASAP if they want a sax player to perform at their Wedding, for context if your Wedding is on a Saturday during our peak season (from September to May) book them at least 12-18 months in advance.
DELIVER THE MUSIC…DIFFERENTLY.
We have all been to enough Weddings now and the same order, process and even songs are used on repeat for the same moments…this can become boring and doesn’t spark the interest of your guests. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of great songs that get played at most weddings and you definitely need these too, but you should consider slight variations to be different enough to still be amazing and also suit the vibe. Let’s talk about the Bouquet toss for example, I will give you one guess: what song is most commonly used for this? You guessed it… Single Ladies by Beyonce. Now two things with this. 1. This gets used because it’s so appropriate for that moment and it always works amazingly, so there is nothing wrong with using it if you like this song for that moment. And 2. This is also a great opportunity to be a little different without hurting your dance floor – For example Beyonce’s song – Diva is an absolute anthem for the girls – Get your DJ to play this song for the Bouquet toss and watch the ladies go off!
2 quick additions you can do at your Wedding.
- Instead of background music as your guests walk in. Have a ‘pump up song’ as the room is revealed, this is so different to what usually happens and lets your guest know from the first second, that your Wedding is going to be a party! A great song idea for this would be The Jacksons – Can you feel it. Do this and feel the energy in the room lift as soon as your room is revealed.
- When your speech makers are introduced, have a ‘walk out song’ for each one to reflect their personality. For example if the groom’s brother is making a speech a fun walk out song for him may be – AC DC – Thunderstruck, however choosing something to align with each person is key here, also have fun with it, give your guests a little laugh here, it goes a long way in lifting the mood.
THE MARRIED COUPLE DJ SET!?! (yes you read that right)
This is the first time you will ever hear this and read till the end…trust me. I have personally tried this one a couple of times and it’s the best thing you can possibly do to get your guests engaged on the dance floor.
So imagine this – it’s nearing the last 30 minutes of your Wedding reception, some of your guests are getting tired, some are still tearing up the dance floor. All of a sudden your MC announces that the couple will be doing the next DJ Set. The couple make their way to the decks, put on the headphones and play the next couple of songs! (pre planned of course). Watch what happens as the couple are now in control of the DJ decks! All of your guests will be absolutely blown away and hit the dance floor and take the energy to max capacity for the rest of the night. Now the mixing etc here does not matter one bit, that fact that you are in control of the DJ decks is all they need to be taken to the next level.
